That’s right ladies and gents. I now have a fitness routine that I’ll be doing every time I attend the gym, which will be around 3 – 4 days a week.
But before I get into that, I’d like to first mark my weight in this blog post.

I now weigh around 72kgs, which is kind of weird in my mind as I weighed 85kgs when I came back to the UK. I’ve somehow lost all of this weight and haven’t even noticed it, as I haven’t really been taking care of my fitness levels or body – as a matter of fact. I’m not sure if I should be celebrating or concerned. Either way, now that I know this I’m eating much more and I’m doing resistance training exercise. I’ve bought lots of healthy food with a great deal of proteins, vitamins and all that other jazz.
Another announcement is that I actually tried the rowing machines for a full 20 minutes:

It’s the first time I’ve ever used a rowing machine and this machine will now replace the running machine. Running is definitely cutting away at my muscles, so I’ve actually got to put a stop to that and start doing a great deal of resistance training exercises.
My routine?
- 5 minute stretch
- Rowing (fast tempo) x 20 minutes
- Vertical Traction (25 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Chest Press (25 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Pulley (25 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Incline Chest Press (25 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Shoulder Press (10 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Arm Curl (10 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Leg Extension (25 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Total Abdominal (30 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Leg Press (40 kg – slow tempo) x 12 repetitions (3 sets)
- Front Plank (for as long as possible)
The weights are a little low, but then again – I only weigh 72 kg and need to slowly adjust to bigger weights when I can adapt to that stage of weight lifting. I’ll be reviewing this on the 28th with one of the instructors who created this routine for me, as a way of rebuilding muscle that I may have lost when I lost the weight that I did lose.
I’m feeling quite confident that I can keep up with this and stick to it. Hopefully I’ll look somewhat different before I return to work and if not I’ll still be as committed as ever to build up muscle. That’s one of my goals for next year I guess.

I’m officially a gym goer now.
I signed up to a gym that is very local and is only 7 minutes walking distance from where I live. Last week I had a tour of the place and I pretty much liked it from the start. It’s funny as I did a Google search for this gym and there were quite a few negative reviews.
Here are a few of the reviews:

The leisure centre/gym has an overall rating of 3.1 out of 5. This is obviously not very good and I do think they need to make a few changes – that aren’t too costly nor too difficult to make.
So what are those changes?
I agree with the second review above – and that was made a year ago. Staff at reception seemed a little abrupt and they aren’t really behind the idea of ‘customer care’ or any other term that benefits the customer. Retraining or just be nicer to your customers? I don’t know, but someone out there does and it’s definitely an issue as other people have also posted similar issues with abrasive staff.
Another thing that I didn’t do today at the gym was have a shower. The shower room was wet, looked old, and was dirty. It could definitely do with a remodelling, as it’s just not up to scratch. I wouldn’t shower in there and I didn’t. Luckily I only live 7 minutes away, so I can just shower at home.
These aren’t really major problems. Also, for the price of just £19.95 per month, you really can’t complain too much. I’m the sort of person to not really care that much about these other things that people are pointing out – so as long the price is right then I’m comfortable with attending this gym. During my tour of this gym the tour guide actually did say they would be remodelling – hopefully that also includes the gym shower room.
So, how about the actual gym room?
In my opinion the gym room is pretty nice. Others have left reviews saying that the weight lifting section leaves a lot to be desired. I can certainly understand that point of view, as the gym – during peak hours – will be full of people wanting to go on the same machines that you’re using. I think it’s pretty much a free for all, and I could certainly see people waiting to go on the machines they’d like to use if the gym is full. Perhaps they could introduce a booking system? Then again, that may put a lot of people off from joining in the first place.
Factoring in the price and all the other stuff that I’ve pointed out, I would rate this gym/leisure centre 3.8 out of 5. If you’re looking for a no frills gym – then this is definitely the place to sign up.
What did I do in the gym today?
Enough with the review and onto what I actually did today.
I did 15 minutes of running and sprinting, 20 minutes of arm curls, 6 minutes of press ups, 20 minutes of poorly done sit-ups/crunches and 6 minutes of front planks. On that last bit, front planks are bloody difficult. They look really easy, but after a while it really hurts your arms, but you can definitely feel something happening around your ribs and abdomen.
I did enjoy today and it did feel like a good workout. I’ve actually signed up for a sort of plan that I’ll go on, which will happen on Sunday. So, instead of doing these random exercises, I’ll have a set routine. I’m actually quite excited about that.
Peace.

From the 17th of December to the 2nd of January, 2014 – I’ll be on annual leave.
I haven’t planned too much, but I have spent quite a bit of money on a new laptop that arrived on my doorsteps today. Here are the specifications of my new laptop:
I’ve started using the laptop. I just need to get Photoshop, ScreamingFrog, and a few other programs that I’ll need for work. I justified the cost of paying for this because of my job. Otherwise, I would have stuck with my old sluggish laptop that I’ve had for over 2 years. I have yet to test it for gaming and it has a dedicated graphics card with 2GB of memory. I should be able to play most modern games – if I wanted to.
The only bit of technology that I’d like would be a new camera and perhaps a new phone. Although, my Nexus 4 is pretty decent and I can’t quite complain with the performance of that phone. In fact, I’m thinking of saving up for a new camera, as I’d like to get my photography site back up and running with new content.
Fitness update
I’ve not really been doing anything too healthy this year and I guess the blog section on here under “Health” reflects that. I have however decided to join a leisure centre that is not too far from where I live. I went on a tour of the place yesterday and it looks fantastic. It has a decently sized swimming pool, a nice cosy gym, and if you want to do yoga, martial arts etc then there are classes for those.
I’ll likely be sticking to running, lifting weights, and swimming.
The best thing about this leisure centre is actually the price. It’s only £20 per month, but you do have to pay 3 months in advance and thereafter it works like a sort of rolling contract. You also don’t have to pay the world for the lockers, too. I found this to be the case for Easy Gym on Tottenham Court Road, where you have to purchase a lock. At ‘my’ leisure centre you only have to insert a £1 and you get it back after. It’s a pretty sweet deal, which I’ll be taking advantage of.
It’s time to become healthy again!

I’ve now moved onto exercise 19.
def cheese_and_crackers(cheese_count, boxes_of_crackers):
print "You have %d cheeses!" % cheese_count
print "You have %d boxes of crackers!" % boxes_of_crackers
print "Man that's enough for a party!"
print "Get a blanket. \n"
print "We can just give the function numbers directly:"
cheese_and_crackers(20, 30)
print "OR, we can use variables from our script:"
amount_of_cheese = 10
amount_of_crackers = 50
cheese_and_crackers(amount_of_cheese, amount_of_crackers)
print "We can even do math inside too:"
cheese_and_crackers(10 + 20, 5 + 6)
print "And we can combine the two, variables and math:"
cheese_and_crackers(amount_of_cheese + 100, amount_of_crackers + 1000)
Explaining each line
Line 1
On line 1 we have the start of the mini-script (“def”) and then we have cheese_and_crackers which is the function that will be used throughout the rest of the script. For this first function/mini-script we have “cheese_count” and “boxes_of_crackers”) inside the parenthesis. We’ll use these on lines 2 and 3.
Lines 2 – 8
On line 2 we have %d that uses “% cheese_count” and that “name” is on line 1; the same goes with line 2. The other lines are too basic to explain, so I’m just going to skip to line 8, which is where the data is pulled when executing/running the file, so that line 8 “cheese_and_crackers(20, 30)” with the numbers corresponding and displaying when the file is executed.
Lines 10 – 14
The more direct way of imputing numbers is using variables and in this case we declare the numbers after creating a variable name then after the equation mark we enter the value (Lines 11 – 12). So we can re-use the function data from “cheese_and_crackers” we use it when calling for the variables so it re-uses the data in lines 1 – 3; however, uses the values within the variables and not the values in line 8.
After explaining all those lines, the rest of the lines make sense now and I feel I have a clear grasp of it now.
Output in Windows Powershell:
We can just give the function numbers directly:
You have 20 cheeses!
You have 30 boxes of crackers!
Man that's enough for a party!
Get a blanket.
OR, we can use variables from our script:
You have 10 cheeses!
You have 50 boxes of crackers!
Man that's enough for a party!
Get a blanket.
We can even do math inside too:
You have 30 cheeses!
You have 11 boxes of crackers!
Man that's enough for a party!
Get a blanket.
And we can combine the two, variables and math:
You have 110 cheeses!
You have 1050 boxes of crackers!
Man that's enough for a party!
Get a blanket.
Next step
So, after learning and studying this, I moved onto the next step. The next step was creating something of my own and seeing if it would work. Since I like the raw_input() function, as you can add user input functionality, I tried and succeeded in adapting raw_input() with a def function.
Here’s what I got:
def hello_world(name, country, favcountry, favgame, languages):
print "\n"
print "This is how you responded to those questions:\n"
print "Your first name is: %r" % (name)
print "Your country of origin is: %r" % (country)
print "Your favourite country is: %r" % (favcountry)
print "Your favourite game is: %r" % (favgame)
print "You said you can speak these languages: %r" % (languages)
print "That's all! \n"
print "Please answer the following questions."
hello_world(raw_input("First name: "),
raw_input("Your country of origin: "),
raw_input("What's favourite country?: "),
raw_input("What's favourite game?: "),
raw_input("What languages can you speak? (Separate with a comma): ")
)
It works and it isn’t too shabby. However, according to this exercise I have to use 10 other functions in the same file to show that I really know how to use this newly learnt method and probably to practice other functions other than those I’ve been using for a long time! I’ve only used one type of function which is raw_input(); however, I’m a little tired of this exercise so I’m going to move onto exercise 20 and I’ll return to this exercise, if need be it!

This is when I broke my leg at the age of 16.
Losing weight has always been something that I’ve wanted to do, but that I’ve never done until recent. I didn’t use to be overweight (I’m not overweight now – as I write this) and at one point I could run for as long as I wanted and was one of the best long distance runners in my school year at secondary school. (See picture to the right; you can see that I wasn’t overweight at all.)
That is of course until I broke my leg playing football. I missed 6 months of school that I could never recover and if I was ever behind in any subject at school, it was at that point where I was doing my worst. I started putting on weight, as I could not exercise for over a year and a half, and I had not bothered to watch my weight. Life was on the downside and I piled on the stones/pounds like a baby elephant.
My leg injury, which damaged my growth plate, has still left its everlasting mark on me and has caused me to have issues like early symptoms of arthritis, it has affected me in more ways than I could have imagined. However, I’m committed to doing what I’ve always wanted to be, a fit and healthy person. I plan to complete marathons and I plan to become a healthier me.
I could ramble on and on, but that would be quite boring. To say as little as I can, I put on weight and managed to top weights of around 110kg, which is around 17 stones, 244lbs or 0.111 metric tonnes. 😛 I was a heavy motherfucker. (more…)
