Trip to Kaohsiung (高雄)

by | Jan 30, 2013 | Travel

I recently went to this place called Gaoxiong (Pinyin) or Kaohsiung (TW Pinyin; 高雄) and it is the first time I’ve been there since I’ve been in Taiwan. Usually, foreigners will travel around and go places; however, little old me has just primarily stayed in Taichung.  I’m boring I guess. Although if cash weren’t a concern I’d be going anywhere and everywhere, so I need to be a little fiscally conservative if I want to survive.

I went with a group of friends and with my sister, and we met up with my friend’s relatives who took us around Kaohsiung on a sort of tour guide of the nice places in and out of the city.

One of those places we went to was a place called Cháishān (柴山), a mountain in Kaohsiung that has a monkey reserve sitting on it! Below you can see a few pictures I took of the monkeys on Chaishan!

Here are the pics:

After that we went to a Lego exhibition; essentially an art exhibition on Lego pieces and models by a guy named Nathan Sawaya.

That was okay. I’m not really into Lego, so I wasn’t impressed that much; however, I did like the computer Lego that Nathan Sayawa built. It goes without saying that it likely took him a long time to come up with concepts and ideas to build these Legos.

Lunch time

The lunch we had at Gaoxiong was very traditional. It was cold meat (Pigs stomach, liver etc) and it almost made me throw up.

Love River (愛河)

It’s a shame it wasn’t night time when I took these pictures as apparently it looks much nicer at night according to pictures I’ve seen and from the mouths of my friends who live in Gaoxiong. (高雄人)

Dinner time

I was a little discouraged about dinner seeing as lunch was dreadful; however, I was sorely mistaken considering dinner was amazing. The thing about Gaoxiong is that it sits next to the sea, so any sea food is freshly imported or captured within the limits of Taiwan or other areas where they catch sea food. The crab was most excellent along with the prawn, and especially so the black ink rice; I thought I would never eat anything with black ink in it, but it was tasty!

I do have other pictures, as we went to a fair ground that was situated on top of a shopping center; literally a Ferris Wheel was placed on top of the shopping mall along with a few other things. Crazy, I know. I’ve never seen anything like it. Here’s a pic to get an idea of what I’m talking about:
